Nicole Conway delivers an ending to a series that leaves me with mixed feelings that made a work I would have given a four star rating a three-star only because I can't give it a 2.5. It very much feels like a bait and switch type of book in which the promises of the first three books are somewhat ignored or forgotten in the final book of the series while she prepares the ground for the next book series set in the same world.A little honey before the vinegar. Nicole Conway does create characters that you feel for. Part of the frustration with this book is that her characters are interesting and you care about what happens to them and the relationships they have developed. She's shown at least that she's willing to take chances in her stories. I feel that she would be great in writing epic fantasies with multiple points of views. The story still pulls you in but not as deeply as the previous three books because there's always a feeling it's something just a little off.
The truth is the series could have been wrapped up easily in the third book. In order to stretch out a fourth book we are given a new point of view from Felix in large part of the final book leaving only 7 chapters in total for the main protagonist, Jaevid, in the middle. The first part of the book takes up most of the story in which we follow Felix around for the three months that Jaevid was lost in the forest. While it is interesting to see a romantic relationship evolve with the character for the most part it's simply depressing and was summed up in the previous book with Felix punching his friend in the face. It feels bizarre that the third part of the book comes from Felix's point of view as he watches Jaevid. I feel this choice would have been okay so long as the author had done such things in the previous three books. Instead it felt like an awkward story with the pacing wasn't quite right and information dumping was much less smooth and mmore redundant. The resolution of the of the series comes off as wonky as if the author was trying too hard to surprise the reader with certain twist of Fates.
Nicole Conway makes decisions in this work that are hard to pull off making the story feel both too short and too long at the same time. For and ending of a series that was supposed to have an Epic Fantasy feel it felt rushed. I was sorely disappointed in what should have been an epic Clash involving swords and plenty of action be almost fast-forwarded through making what had been a supposedly hardcore antagonist into a laughable villain. The entire confrontation that the book series was leading to comes and goes in a blink of an eye. Point A to point B with no twist in between. Even as I give my review I find myself liking the story less and less. Too much of what had been set forth in the previous three books unravels at the end and does somewhat taint the series.
That said considering the author is going to have a sequel series I'm more than likely will read it but with a great deal more caution and trepidation. A Series has to be really bad for me not to finish it or pick up stories that follows in it.

It is not often a book will keep me up just to finish it. This is one. Well written and intertaining. Of course, there are dragons.
Misfits who change everthing. The dragons always pick their intended rider. A small, weak gray elf, hardly able to pick up a sword, picked by a dragon ? A young lad befriends him at the dragonrider college. They have many things to overcome. Hidden talents come out. Now add the blackness of evil.
There are still other charactors involved. A raven haired rider in black on the biggest dragon anyone had everseen, only showing up when needed, with skills beyond reason, and then simply disappears.
There has never been a time a young girl has been picked by a dragon as a rider.
Life weaves throughout the story. Growing up, love, best friends, birth, war, death, and honour.
I can't tell you the last time that I latched onto a new author and a new series and ate it up like this one. The story was fantastic ! The character development and different take on relationships between animals and men and elves and humans was just fantastic. I definitely recommend this for anybody that likes fantasy!
I love these books they drew me and my kids in and we have loved reading them. We fell in love with all the characters and worried about them as we waited for the next book. This book leaves us with a cliff hanger that was heartbreaking. It seemed a little to real life for me. The book was a 5 out of 5 because it drew you in and kept you involved. In the end I was more than a little heart broken but that's a sign of a good book. This book is a book that you close and realize the election is almost over and you have missed the day because you have been living in another world. These books took me to a world I never knew existed. It was wonderful. Thank you Nicole for the glimpse into being a dragon rider I am so happy to hear the story isnt over.
Sadly I was disappointed with this book. I have really enjoyed Conway's writing style in the three previous books of the series but this one falls flat. There are large jumps in time that are disorienting and disconcerting throughout, the story feels rushed and lacks connection with the characters. The first half of the book catapults us back in time to the battle before Jaevid was captured and is told from Felix's point of view. This feels unimportant and unnecessary, more like the author wanted to give a favored character his moment in the sun than really helping the story progress or giving the reader important information. Everything that took place in these chapters could have been covered in a heated argument between Jaevid and Felix. When we finally reach when the last book left off we are returned to Jaevid's perspective however we only get to enjoy the return for a few chapters before we are abruptly returned to Felix's perspective for the rest of the story. Considering the entire series up to the point has pretty much been told from Jaevid's perspective I found this frustrating. He is the central character and has essentially been shunted aside in this book. I have grown to love Jae's honest, poignant and sarcastic perspective. The pacing from this point on accelerates so fast as to be anticlimactic. When we switch to Felix's perspective it becomes confusing. I can understand why the author made the choices she did but I feel they were not the strongest. I would have preferred the story pick up closer to where the last one left off and that Jaevid carried us through to the end.
